Cabinets of Curiosities – Esplanade PIP’s PLAYBOX

Commissioned by Esplanade with an open brief to fill the cabinets of PIP’s Playbox, I thought about what could be meaningful for children to learn when they open up the cabinets. Continuing with a running theme of an environmental message in some of my works, I wanted to explore introducing children to evolution and mutation of flora and fauna due to environmental disasters like Chernobyl or the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The story teller’s cave at Esplanade’s PIP’s Playbox is now filled with some familiar animals that look strangely peculiar, where they have endured and survived the human experiments, natural disasters and pollution over the ages. These cabinets of curiosities contain some animals I imagine to exist in 2200 AD.
